Wind energy generation by state

When you think of Texas energy, you probably think about oil derricks and natural gas pumps. But wind turbines have become a much more prominent part of the landscape of the Lone Star State. Texas leads the nation in electricity generated by wind energy. The May ChooseEnergy.com® Wind Generation Report analyzes the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and shows just how much the state dominates.

Texas produced almost a quarter of the nation’s electricity generated by wind in February — the most recent data released from the EIA. That’s more than twice the amount from the next state, Montana. Here’s the rest of the top 10, in thousand megawatt-hours.

Nationally, electricity generation from wind decreased slightly by 0.1% from January to February.

Following are the states with significant wind energy generation, the amounts (in thousand megawatt-hours) produced in September, and the percentage increase or decrease from the previous month.

Total wind generation rose by 42% nationally from February 2021 to February 2022. Generation increased by the greatest percentage in Vermont, where it rose by 121%.

The largest decline was in Utah. There were several other states that experienced a decline in wind energy generation since February 2021, including Hawaii, Virginia, Oregon, and Nevada.

The answer can vary from month to month. In February, Iowa took the top spot on the list, receiving 68.4% of its electricity from wind.
